How can I write a generalized error handler.right now iam thinking of capturing

You can't in t-sql because a lot of errors stop the batch and control returns directly to the client.
You can have a proc that is called by other procs when they get an error but it's probably not worth trying to do much else.

Cursors are useful if you don't know sql.
DTS can be used in a similar way.
