Anyone know how to set the report to automatically print in landscape without the user changing the print layout in the windows preference setting?

Yes. You must change the report layout. Go to the Report menu item, report properties, layout tab. Swap the page width and height. So this changes the report for everyone on display and not just printing.

Also I had posted another thread on this but I could not find it, you were even in that thread :(.
Anyhow, by default vs.net reporting services stores by default the size as 8.5 x 11 in the report properties. Just flip these two numbers around, and save the report. Voila now it's landscape.

Jon,

I did follow what you said on that thread, but when I print, it stil prints it as portrait view. In the print view it does look landscape, but I would still need to go to print setup to change it to print landscape manually. Curious if there's a way so that it will detect if it should be in landscape or portrait automatically.

Tara,

Also did what you suggested, but same result as above. I have set wdith to 11 and height 8.5, but still prints like 8.5x11.

If you're referring to when it sends it to the printer of course you have to manually change that, RS has nothing to do with your printer.

Oh okay. I thought that there might be an option like some software when it prints out, it automatically sets it to landscap or portrait base on the format set forth.

Thanks.

This is indeed frustrating, especially when I go to print a sample page from the designer's preview tab. Chris, have you sent this in to sqlwish@microsoft.com? I just did and perhaps the more requests they get for this the more likely it will be resolved soon.

In my email, I drew the parallel to Word. The document settings automatically override the printer settings so that I don't have to manually change printer settings back and forth.

There is actually one way to do this, however the problem is the solution is not inside reporting services. You would have to write a lot of vb.net and actually change the settings of your printer via code. Its a bugger though, a lot of how to program this is not well documented, I had done something a while back that integrated pdf fine print factory into an application. They had a complete API that worked with vb / vb.net that was open source.

Developers basically took the framework and customized it to fit their needs. You would have to do the exact same thing here...but like I said it is not fun stuff.

I thought that ms would fix this issue in their service pack release but I think they geared more towards exporting problems then printing problems :(.

Funny thing is that it works fine if I export to PDF. The contents in PDF come out in landscape like they should. It shouldn't be this hard. I hope they put somebody on this to fix it straight out of RS in the 2005 edition.

I agree, I've sent my request numerous times regarding this issue. The printer distiller with the pdf export automatically takes the page width and height and translates that into whether the report is landscape or portrait.

I cannot seem to understand why these types of parameters are not passed to the actual printer settings when trying to print a report.
You wouldn't believe how many user's call or email me and ask me to make the reports "more printer friendly". I end up going over there and showing them that they have to change the actual page layout in the printer itself. Many remarks I get is "shouldn't the program know that..." My answer is easier said than done :).

I just emailed them about a couple of other issues that I would like to see changed in the next release.

For one, being able to add ReportItems to the body section of the report will be the most valuable feature for me.

Then being able to print in different modes depending on setting, export to Excel without no extra columns, and export to Excel with grid.

Subject: response

I recieved this response from Syed which I do not understand. I am not asking about a technical problem, I am asking about a problem in the actual reporting services application. The application does not distinguish whether a report is to be printed in landscape mode vs. portrait mode. The report in reporting services has been designed to use 11x8.5 (landscape) but when you print the document it comes out as portrait. It ONLY comes out in landscape mode when you actually modify the printer settings EVERYTIME.

My original question was why does reporting services not print like microsoft word, in that word uses the size specified and determines whether the report should be printed as landscape or as a portrait report. Reporting services on the other hand ALWAYS chooses portrait landscape. I am not looking to open up a ticket or contact ms for technical support, this is not a technical support issue, this is an application issue that needs to be addressed.

For additional information.

Thanks

Kindly,
Jon

Subject: landscape reports in reporting services

When I print a landscape report in reporting services it comes out in portrait mode, ONLY UNLESS I manually
set the print page to landscape on the printer options. Why does reporting services not work like microsoft word?

It should know that if I have designed a landscape report that it should print AS a landscape report.

Fix this issue.

Jon

Hi,

I have created a report using sql reporting services 2000 with page height 8.5 and width 11. When i try to export it to PDF format it is exported as PDF with portrait page orientation. I have 10 columns in the report. Half columns are printed in first page and another half columns printed in second page. But i want this report as all columns are to be printed in one page.

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks,
Bhuvana

Hey guys,

I was facing the same problem and when I changed the report width and height from report properties, it works fine for me. I am getting landscape mode while printing, exporting and when I am looking at the report. I have set Page width to 11in and Page Height to 8.5in.

Best of luck...
Sumit
