But how the heck do you even print an rs report...
Its amazing cause there is exporting and refreshing buttons on the container of RS...but there is NOT a single print button.
And if you use file->print from the menu at the top that prints the entire site. This cant be real ????

UPDATE

Extra Extra read all about it...RS is worse than crystal!

http://discuss.fogcreek.com/joelonsoftware/default.asp?cmd=show&ixPost=128999

You have GOT to be kidding me...here I am loving RS because on the development side there is a STUPID little
printer button...deploy the app and weeks later I get emails from people saying there is no "Print" capability.
As I look into it ... there IS NO frigging print method...I read over MSDN and posts and blogs and people are pissed
cause it says "You need to export the report to PDF / Excel then print the report"...

O thanks that's REALLY efficient. Another piece of trash...couldn't of expected anything better from Microshaft!

I found a solution to this...

You see RS has a save button which you can export to your favorite format (PDF or Excel Spreadsheet). When you save the report, you use the printing facility of that application that opens the saved report.

That is the WORST solution I've ever heard of...
If the report designer in VB.net allows you to print, MS should of implemented client side printing availablity. I thought I liked RS, but I am starting to see a LACK of a lot of things..

Funny Crystal has too much and RS has too little...whose in between? Anyone wanna go in business ?

>>MS should of implemented client side printing availablity.

Do you mean when viewing the reports in a web browser, or is there a client application/control that you can deploy that allows viewers to run/view reports?

if it is through a web browser, what do you expect? it's a web-based reporting tool. printing w/ headers and footers and page numbers isn't possible without installing something on the client; the web browser controls just about all aspects of printing not the page being viewed.

Yes it's via a web browser. Our customers are happy with selecting the option to view in PDF then printing from there.

Jeff,

I realize its a web based application, that certainly does not mean a viewer or at least a programmable kit such as an SDK / JDK could be included with RS. In tara's case she's lucky customers are fine with opening a PDF and printing from there. But all customers are not the same...my customers want a direct print button. Click it and bam...it prints.

Opening up adobe is in itself lengthy in time to some of these machines...so having to open it wait and file over to print is time consuming..maybe not to you, but you aren't paying my bills :).

Jon, if it doesn't claim to come with that feature, you shouldn't expect it! Research ahead of time and find out for sure before you decide to start using the product; don't complain if some assumptions you had made turned out to be false if you never read anywhere that they were true.

Its hard to fathom that such a thing doesnt exist in an "enterprise tool" how ever people make mistakes, I take the blame...besides...I guess I can wait for the viewer to come out in the next release its just painful hearing people complain.

"Time to research..."

BAHAHAHAHHAHA If you only knew.......

Exactly how do your clients print Crystal Reports from a web page? Unless they released a client print feature with Crystal 11, you can only print them from the web by...exporting to PDF first. The only way to directly print a Crystal Report is...from the report designer.

I'm trying to understand what you think RS is doing wrong here when Crystal works in the exact same way.

And if this is your only complaint about RS, you've obviously never installed, managed, or tried to program Crystal Enterprise.

You must not have read the numerous posts regarding crystal...the comparison wasn't meant to be taken seriously...I cant go back to crystal, I lost brain cells and money using that tool. In any event I was able to use their API to create a crystal viewer for various clients. That viewer could be called directly from the clients machine, much like any C++ / VB.net / VB application.

My other complaints in RS are very hard to explain, since many times you cannot mimic or find the various issues I've had. Search the topics you will see many references to this. Crystal 11 is certainly no better, although it is chock full of features (many of which I don't personally care for). I think RS is still much much much more simplier to develop, deploy, and create reports with. This looks iffy http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/crystlrf/html/crlrfreportdocumentclassprinttoprintermethodtopic.asp

If the reporting tool is creating html perhaps you can add your own css print styles to print only the sections that are relevant. However, this may not be possible and I could be way off since I've never used this tool before.

Just heard this: RS sp2 will include the option of printing directly from html. Only catch is that an ActiveX control must be installed on the client.
