If I am the only person acessing a db, and I want to improve the performance on a select * from the table, will a table lock do that?
Any what about a big INSERT? Can you put a table lock on an insert to improve performance?

1. Let SQL Server manage all of your locks.

2. Big INSERT? Use BCP or minimaly logged operation like SELECT * INTO newTable FROM myTable99 +

3. Best way to improve performance is indexes

+ Don't use SELECT *, list out the columns

2a. BULK INSERT may be something to look into as well.

Everything Brett said above was dead on, as usual.
