Good logical design is one which reflects the requirements of your information needs.
Good physical design is one which balances all the costs (performance and storage) of best meeting the logical design.

Horizontal or vertical are not usual terms associated with database design, other than in the context of the phrase "partitioning"....so I'm at a loss as to what you are talking about here.

How fast you can retrieve 1 record....it depends on the implemented physical design, quantity of data PLUS the quality of the physical EQUIPMENT you are using.

my personal belief is that a normalized approach is the best in your case...

and in every other case...
