At work I have a client who is concerned that his sql server has too many connections present at one time. He wants me to suggest some network monitoring tools to figure out the load on his MS SQL 2000 server. I have had almost no luck in finding this type of information on the MS website and I didnt see much on Administration in the FAQ.Thanks very much.

sp_who is my first choice, it shows all current connections on the server. sp_monitor also provides some useful statistics including network activity.SQL Profiler would be next, you can create a trace to watch login and logout events. You can also monitor the actual commands the connection is sending. And lastly, you can use the Windows Performance monitor to keep an eye on SQL Server connections and connection pooling events, and also network traffic (packets, etc.)All of these come free with SQL Server, and are documented in Books Online. I'd suggest digging into them first before spending a lot of time or money on 3rd party tools.

definitely try the free stuff first. I personally think your bosses request is a little odd. Are you having performance problems? How many connections do you currently have? We have some systems that will occasionally have a hundred or two connections active without any problem at all.Do you have thousands of connections active? Seems to me like this is a waste of effort on your part. Reminds me of when I used to run a restaurant and we would send the newbie to the cooks for a can of steam. -ec
