Which is the best approach with regards to the mirror of data from one server to another.

My first option is to use the replication service available in SQL.
what I need to know here is what are thr pro's and the con's of using this method.

My second option is to use a third party software such as Double Take. Again what would be the pro's and con's

I will not be using cluster service or any hardware high availability.

answers on a postcard.

perhaps a third option could be log shipping? http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/sql/2000/reskit/part4/c1361.mspx

We have considered ship logging. For now I need to look at the first two options I have, with the ship logging as a final step.

What about failover clustering, or are we talking about a remote machine?

Why go for a third party tool when there is replication?
1. How big is the DB?
2. What is size of the transactions?
3. How much data you can afford to lose?

Don't replication only come with Enterprise Edition?
I'm guessing there's a cost savings by not doing an upgrade and just buying a slightly cheaper 3rd party tool.

Michael.

It would be to a remote machine about 50 miles away from the primary server. We have a 2mb link between the sites, however this link would be shared with other applications.

I think for this type of problem, log shipping is the standard solution.
