Hi

I received the trial 2005 Enterprise edition software to give 2005 a shot. Everything installed fine but no Managment Studio to interface with it. All the documentation I read (like this http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms174173.aspx ) just expects the software to be there.

I can't find it as a download. Does anyone know what the deal is?

You have to select the option to install the client tools during setup. It is not a default option. So you'll need to re-run your setup (you won't need to un-install), and make sure to select that option.

Hmmm....I go into the installation and one of the generic options to install is 'workstation components, books online, and development tools'

If I click on Advanced there is an area that shows client components and then under that managment tools. In the written description it does list Managment Studio. However, Specific apps like Management Studio are not listed as components that I can install and uninstall. So all I can do is try to install 'Entire Feature Will be Installed on Hard Drive' on Managment Tools. If I do that and hit next the application tells me that 'workstation components, books online, and development tools' is already installed and to click on details. If I do that it tells me

Name: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Tools Express Edition
Reason: Your upgrade is blocked.

I just got this DVD in the mail a couple days ago....and its not Express Edition. Can you not use a Query Analyzer tool in the Trial software!!??

I guess you'll need to try un-installing then re-install.

Have you installed other 2005 products such as Visual Studio .NET 2005 Express Edition. I believe that would have given you a SQL Server 2005 Express Edition.

Query Analyzer does not exist in 2005 anymore, neither does Enterprise Manager. Everything is in Management Studio now.

Yeah I understand that EM and QA don't exist anymore...hence my frustration with getting the Management Studio thing going.

As far as installing other software I can't be the only person to try to do the IIS, .NET 2.0, Visual Studio (Professional Edition), Sql Server thing....spending hours on crazy iterative issues like permissions only to find out something like Front Page Server Extensions allowed me to install version 2002 without 2000 (a secret prereq) with nary a wisper of a warning.

Anyway.....that reference to Express edition is not too clear but seems to be saying I have that already installed and I can not install the full blown edition because I have trial software. I can uninstall and reinstall but before I do that do you know definitively that the trial software even allows Managment Studio?

I do not know it definitively. I have an MSDN license, so I've never touched trial software.

Just in case someone views this thread...I spent a few more hours on this. Also came across this thread

Good to see others have shared my pain in the install process. Anyway I ended up taking the advice in this post (thanks again)...I uninstalled completely and reinstalled using the advanced feature to add most of the components. It worked. I now have Studio Manager and SQL Server.

Quick Rant (cause I gotta be one of those tools who rant on a forum) - OMG Microsoft get your install to be more intuitive and also not allow software like Express (Your software and part of SQL Server family of products) to be installed by defuault and consequently jack up or prohibit future installs of software like Studio Manager with no application error or warning messages.....I mean 'upgrade blocked' give me a break. I shudder to think about the people who are upgrading expansive production environments. It must be a trully herculean task.
