support for SQL2K Sp3a has been extended to july 2007. it was originally scheduled for desupport this month (july 2006).

Here is the email I received from one of our Microsoft reps:

-----

SQL Server 2000 SP3a Support Extended

In accordance with the Microsoft Support Lifecycle Policy, support for Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 3a (SP3a) has been extended until July 10, 2007.

This extension is not a change in policy, as the policy states that when a Service Pack is released, Microsoft will provide 12 or 24 months of support for the previous Service Pack. Per the policy, support may be extended to 24 months for those Service Packs where Microsoft believes customers will need additional time for testing and deployment.

After careful consideration, Microsoft concluded an additional 12 months of support was needed to complete Service Pack 4 (SP4) deployments. Recognizing the challenges of deploying SP4, Microsoft has extended the support for SQL Server 2000 SP3a another 12 months or until July 10, 2007.

Microsoft recommends that customers currently using SQL Server 2000 SP3a utilize the 12-month extension to migrate to SQL Server 2000 SP4 or SQL Server 2005. Mainstream Support for SQL Server 2000 SP4 will still be available until April 8, 2008 and Extended Support will continue until April 9, 2013.

I'm curious about these supports.

Does it mean you can log a case to MS and it's free? How does it work? By the sound of it, MS is giving a period of time to clients to test out and implement the new SP and if they are having difficulty, they can call MS for free?

How does it work anyway?

The call to MS is only free if it turns out to be a bug in their software.

the support extension just means that microsoft will help you with a problem on a server running SQL SP3a. If support had expired as it was supposed to this month, they would have told you to upgrade to SP4 before they would attempt to assist.
