Hi there. Does anyone use the Ms Virtual Server 2005 in UAT or DEV environment especially for SQL environment? If you don't, how about VMWare or others?Any comment regarding this (issue etc)? Thanks |

Absolutely - I have a three servers, a domain controller and a two node cluster (with a SQL Server 2005 failover cluster) all running on my laptop. It works great. I mostly use Virtual PC because it's easier on a desktop or laptop, but I use Virtual Server on my laptop too for the cluster (can't do a cluster in VPC).Personally I don't recommend using differencing disks because you cannot compress (that's compress as in defrag, not as in zip) differencing disks. So differencing appears to save time and disk space when in practice it takes more of both.On a laptop you'll see some strange behaviour in the VMs if you have a "mobile" processor that runs at different speeds to conserve power. The change in speed can cause the mouse and keyboard in the VM to be erratic. There's a hotfix that makes it better sometimes, but I use SpeedswitchXP (http://www.diefer.de/speedswitchxp/) which allows you to force the CPU to run at max.I have used VMWare too, I like it and would recommend it for non-Windows testing/dev, but you can't beat the price of Virtual Server and Virtual PC for Windows systems! You'll need plenty of RAM, disk space and CPU but it works a treat. |
