Currently I am a programmer looking into becoming a DBA. I have been working with a client's SQL 2000 server for about two years and find myself enjoying the whole process of working with databases as opposed to just coding. The only thing is that I have been spoiled the last 5 or 6 years by my ability to work as a programmer primarily by telecommuting. I was wondering if I would have to give up this lifestyle to become a serious DBA or if it is something that can be accommodated. I was a sysadmin for 10 years stuck in an office with a bunch of suits constantly knocking at my door and would not relish the thought of having to re-live the experience. So anyone out there have the luxury of telecommuting to work?Cheers,Mike

If you had experience working as a DBA, that might be possible, but it's a lot to ask to take on someone with no experience as a telecommuter DBA.That's just my opinion, but good luck, maybe you can make it happen.CODO ERGO SUM

thanks for the post Michael... I understand your point about experience, but my post really is about the position as a whole. Telecommuting for programmers is a pretty accepted practice. I was just wondering if it is becoming that way for DBA's. I currently maintain my client's database through a vpn for the most part so it seems like the technology is in place, but is the mindset in management, in general, amenable to telecommuting DBA's?

I have seen it done, and we had a telecommuting DBA at one time here.A lot depends on the exact requirements of the job, so it is hard to make a general statement. I guess it would also depend on the availability of people with the necessary skills in the local area, and the job skill level of the candidate.I think it will be a harder to find that type of position.CODO ERGO SUM

>> but is the mindset in management, in general, amenable to telecommuting DBA's?No it is not. Data has become the most valuable resource for information rich businesses. I have been working from home for nearly 3 years now. It took my entire working IT life to have enough experience and references just to pitch the idea to clients. What did tip them over the line was price! I charge 50% less for working from home.>>I am also interested in Telecommute/onsite DBA with 9 years onsite exp.You are almost half way there....DavidMProduction is just another testing cycle

Depends on the company. You can do a lot from home if they allow the connectivity but for anything apart from a very small outfit you will need to interact with a team. You will still be able to do a lot remotely but will need to be on-site occasionally to make sure they are doing things correctly and to make sure that managers are happy with the way things are going and don't try to sneak in promises that the infrastructure isn't built for.I feel you lose a lot if you work remotely all the time - you learn and teach a lot from being with people.==========================================Cursors are useful if you don't know sql.DTS can be used in a similar way.Beer is not cold and it isn't fizzy.

There are so many hidden downsides to working from home that IME can only be discovered through trial and error...Be careful what you wish for...DavidMProduction is just another testing cycle |
