We are in the initial stages of preparing for bringing in a DW Architect. What struck me odd was no one asked the DBAs about what we should be looking for in an architect. Should the DBAs be involved in the hiring process e.g. interviewing? I think so. Comments welcome

I say definitely! There's no question that if I were hiring, I'd want a DBA to interview a potential DW architect. Not just the DBA of course, you want other people to interview the candidate as well, but the DBA should definitely be involved.

It's important to be there with the DBA while the interview is taking place, DBAs by nature are a bit.... territorial.... So it's good to have a business balance with a DBA that is interviewing. It's also important to review a list of techinical questions beforehand.. I've seen DBAs ask wild off the wall obscure questions that have nothing to do with anything, just trying to stump the candidate.

There is nothing wrong with asking questions the DW Architect might not know, or be expected to know. I have a long list of DBA interview questions, and I don't expect them to know everything.

Interview questions are not just about subject matter knowledge. It's good to see how someone reacts when you ask a question that they cannot answer. I look for an honest "I don't know" or "I think it might be ..., but I'm not sure". When I get someone trying to BS their way through like they know the answer, that's a big strike against them, usually enough to say I wouldn't want to hire them.

By the way, I ask vendors similar questions. If I find a salesman trying to BS me, I can get pretty merciless.
