install the server and not just the client.
Follow the step by step instructions and you will be able to connect as sa or windows user.

its easy. but you need to install the server to use it on standalone laptop.

Thank you. I have been trying to log on using vista, and the version of SQL im using is Enterprise. Do i need to install Microsoft Server 2003. IS that what you mean by installing the server.

THank you

Enterprise Edition can only run on Window Server. Is your laptop running Windows Server ?

If you are using Windows XP you can install the Developer or Express Edition.

No my laptop is quite new and has vista running on it, so i was thinking i could partition the hard drive with windows server then install enterprise. Do you think this would be ok

If you're going to develop in .NET you can just install visual studio 2005 and it will install express edition for you.

The instance name will be ./SQLEXPRESS.

You can then install the advanced edition which includes reporting services.

Important to remember alot of features are locked down by default in 2005 so use the configuration tool to enable features if you need them, and also which protocols (named pipes,tcp/ip,etc..)

Yes. But if you are going to use for development, why not just install the developer edition on Vista ? It saves you the trouble of setting another partition for Window Server for the Enterprise edition.

first if you are running VISTA you need to apply all the appropriate Service Packs for sql server to run on it.

No I do not mean Windows Server 2003, i mean SQL server which you need to select from the options when installing the SQL server 2005.

If you install just the client then it will not work. Try to look for help on service packs and upgrades for vista and sql server 2005

I just want to use it purely for learning purposes, im going through a self learning kit to get my MCTS. So i dont want to publish anything, just for my own use. So can i install the developer edition and still use all the features so i can practise everything.
