What edition of SQL Server 2005 you installed? Did you create named instance while installing? Do you already have another instance of SQL Server on the box?

By edition, I mean Enterprise edition, Standard Edition, Developer edition or Express edition. If it is not express edition, you can't connect to server by saying localhost\SQLExpress.

If you haven't created named instance, your computer name becomes the server name.
