Hi guys,I have just started studying for an MCTS, to eventually get to MCITP for SQL Server 2k5.I am currently in an Application Support position, working with a large clinical Oracle Database, but mainly on a simple querying basis. The plan is obviously to get away from the Tech Support, towards the DBA and I have been researching the current job market and never once found a job offer that said "offering an entry level or Junior DBA position for those that are just starting"... There's always at least a few years of experience already as a DBA required!I am wondering how one is supposed to get that experience if he doesn't get a beginners position to start off with?Any stories from experience? Any hints where to look, how to apply and where maybe?Thanks,-free- |

having DBA experience doesn't necessarily mean "being a DBA for 3 years". If your relevant experience is comparable to being an sa or similar role on a SQL Server, that would qualify. There is a reason employers look for people with experience, because a bad DBA can do a lot of bad things to a server. There are lots of DBA's WITH years of experience that have no clue. Talk to your DBA and see if your role can be expanded so you can learn more and be more effective and knowledgeable at your current job. |

I got my start by being an intern for the DBA team. I was an intern for them from 1996-1999. When I graduated, they hired me full-time.Both that company and my current company hire interns in the DBA team by putting out job applications at the local universities. If they like you, you then get hired as a junior DBA. Note that an intern DBA is not the same as a junior DBA. Most people get their start through years of development experience.Tara KizerMicrosoft MVP for Windows Server System - SQL Serverhttp://weblogs.sqlteam.com/tarad/ |

As Tara and dataguru mentioned, there are really no "entry level" DBA positions. You can start out as SQL Developer and pick up admin stuff as you go, "assist" the DBA team and "move" into the DBA team...Dinakar Nethi************************Life is short.
