Im running a SQL Server 2000 machine, with Windows 2k sp4.

We are currently stuck on an aging Raid5 73gb array for our Web DB's and site data.

I would appreciate anyones suggestions for moving forward and best practices for hardware / backup.

Currently our backup solution is a 80gb VXA-2 tape backup with Backup Exec 10d (sql agent as well) We are going ot need a larger tape drive as well, backups unrelated to SQL are over 80gb :(
What particular tape hardware or other gooder :D solution would you have?

I just read a post possibly implying that Raid5 was not.. best for SQL servers.

And as far as moving forward, 2005, or wait for 2008?

Im quite ignorant, help me cure this disease :)

PS Im awesome at end user desktop spyware support. So use me back.

Relative to the activity of the entire SQL server, will the tempdb really require its own Mirror? We have been running our databases / logs / daily backups on the same raid 5 for years. Which seems suprising to me givin all that Im learning, or perhaps we arent scaled up that far yet.

Will all of our coding and SQL code we have been using with sql 2000 carry over to 2k8 if we go that way? Its it Mostly the same or msotly different?

What type of offsite backups to the members here like? Everyone has a different opinon about brand etc. Im going into this blind and want as much info as possible. Especially since my higherups will suggest I backup to DVD....

You can't mirror system dbs if talking about db mirroring, and don't need backup tempdb if talking about backup.
