Hi There,

Can you throw some light on report designer and report models?

My question is do you need enterpise edition to create and deploy report models to enable you to use the report builder?

It would appear you can create models using the BIDS but deployment of them only is achieable with an enterpise edition licence of SQL? In which case effectively if you want to allow staff to write their own reports against models on your data, an enterpise licence is the only way to do it.

Many Thanks.

Report Builder is available on the Workgroup, Standard and Enterprise editions.

OK but the ability to create and deploy the models that power the report builder is only available in enterpise - is that right?

I know you can create models using the developer version but from what I have read you can only deploy the model using an enterpise edition.

Anybody know if that's right?

Basically I am asking that if I want to use areport builder with the report models deployed into reporting services I am going to have buy an enterprise edition.

No. I know you can create models using SQL Standard. I would assume you can with Workgroup as well.

But can you deploy them once you have written them?

Yes, I've deployed models using the Standard version before. I'm really not sure where you are getting the idea that you can only do this with the Enterprise edition. Did you read that somewhere? Stranger things have happened, but if you can build and consume models with other versions, it is only natural that you can deploy them as well.

Excellent news - thanks for the repsonse - you are right, I had read somewhere that deployment was enterpise level only - thank you for the correct information.
