HOW are you converting? In SSMS or EM?
If so, you are just presented with a warning that you might loose data.

ALTER TABLE MY TABLE ALTER COLUMN MYCOLUMN NVARCHAR(100)

I'm getting error
Cannot alter column 'MYCOLUMN ' because it is 'ntext'.

Do it in EM or SSMS. It will handle all the necessary steps for you.
