I'm going to upgrade the forums this morning starting about 8AM forum time. They should be down for an hour or so.

I've upgraded the forums to the latest version of Snitz. The biggest change is a dramatic reduction in the number of SQL statements sent to the server. You should notice a pretty big performance improvement.

Other improvements include:
  • Email validation at registration

  • Flood control (not needed so far)

  • Sticky Topics - i.e. Announcements

  • Topic Sorting

  • Better Searching

Oh and the handy list of smileys on the post window. And the post window now shows you the most recent post right after the original topic. Please let me know if you find anything that isn't working. I think I've got everything nailed down but you know how these software upgrades are

I want to thank all of you for your patience while I took care of this. Hopefully we won't see anymore problems.

Edit: I forgot to add that you'll probably have to log out and log back in again for it to recognize you.

Graz,

Looks like a stylesheet is included in the <body> section of sqlteam pages. It's supposed to be in the <head></head> portion of the page.

There are a few other html errors too, some serious, some not so serious. I still get an unreadable black background in some tables using the Netscape 7 browser.

Click here to see the html errors.

There's really not much I can do about that type of error. I didn't write the forums and the best I can do is minor tweaks. It's a version of the Snitz Forums (www.snitz.com). All their HTML is generated using Response.Writes (I know) and it's a BEAR to wade through and change.

Looking good !!!!!

I LIKE IT !

I do fear "instant" access to the smiley faces will cause some overuse (as if there wasn't enough already!)

A test:

this is a test of code
We all know that for some reason the first paragraph after a code
section refuses to wrap.
Let's see what happens!

This is a long paragraph after the code section ... will it wrap? I really hope so! The sox beat the yankees yesterday 5-4, I was at the game. It was fun.

"f2" should be "forums"

I think there is a smiley that has gone missing. Some old posts seem to have a broken link (a square box instead of the picture) but no idea which one it is.

Cursors are useful if you don't know sql.
DTS can be used in a similar way.

All the old posts had their links to the smilies broken. I'll look into fixing that this weekend. Probably.

Hey Graz, did you know that you have to be logged in to go to the Members page now? And also to see a user's profile. Interesting change.

Oh, and by the way, CONGRATULATIONS! I know this has been on your to-do list for quite a while. It's nice to get things like that finished.

Hey Graz!

Something else I just noticed. Not sure if this was a change in the Forum or if I just didn't pay attention before. The links to external articles (such as the one to What's new in Yukon (title link)) redirect the current browser window instead of opening a new one (like links within forum posts do). I don't know if you can alter its behavior for external links vs. internal article links, but it might be nice to keep the SQLTeam forum window open so they come back to it rather than just sending the user off into the ether.
