We had a hardware failure on the database server tonight that led to a corruption of the database. After battling it for a while I surrendered and restored from last night's backup. So I'm afraid all your witty posts and helpful answers from today are gone. I sincerely apologize for this happening. In the five years the site has been active I think this is the first time we've lost any significant amount of data.

(And yes ... I know I should do backups more frequently. I'll have to look into it.)

So it's late and I'm calling it a night.

-Bill

Thanks Graz for working on it tonight!

It explains why some of the links in my subscriptions didn't work.

Clearly this hiatus was in response the Jen's post about Fridays ... but that post has gone now so you'll have to take my word for it!

Thanks for sorting it out Graz

Kristen

PS Tara have you flown over to Europe to see us, or are you babysitting a Friday night emergency too?

From the post times, it looks like the backup you restored from was from around 2005/09/16 01:15.

It's like the movie Groundhog Day. We're doomed to wake up each morning and make the same posts over and over.

It was only 5:40pm over here. On a Friday, that's pretty late but was helping developers sort out some data problems.

Ah ... I assumed your post time of " 01:39:12" was local or at least a "USA timezone"

EDIT : Hmmmm ... my post is 5 hours behind, which is about right for USA East Coast. Ho Hum!

Any words for us on what kind of hardware failure led to the corruption?

Don't worry Graz. Your uptime is about 10 trillion times better than this site (error from today):

There seems to have been a slight problem with the dBforums database.
Please try again by pressing the refresh button in your browser.

An E-Mail has been dispatched to our Technical Staff, who you can also contact if the problem persists.

We apologise for any inconvenience.

And, all the posts from yesterday AND today are blank. It will let you reply to posts older than that though. It gives this error though when you try to save them. URRRRRRRRR

Ha, so this explains why I can't find my post...

Yap, do not perform any major database transactions on a Friday (Period with an exclamation point)

There's always a first time for everything Graz and we're just happy everything's back to normal again

Thanks

Jen, Can you explain the reason?

huh?

assuming that you work from M-F regularly, making major changes/transactions on a friday especially nearing 5 pm will kill your social life if anything untoward should happen (knock on wood)

most key persons will be out, even as early as 3pm, so if you're the last man out, you'll be left with the mess to deal with

though it was a mess that i initiated, so i had to stay till 8 pm
