I followed a Search that took me to an old article:

http://www.sqlteam.com/article/our-faq-is-posted

which has a like to the "FAQ"

http://www.sqlteam.com/faq.asp

which is no longer valid. Clicking that just takes me to the home page. personally, if I follow a link (e.g. from Google or some other site) to a specific target, and get taken to what appears to be an arbitrary page, I just click off that site

I wonder if going to a "Sorry" type page, with links to the SiteSearch (or even the SiteSearch form right there on the Sorry page) would help?

Personally I would also log the 404s, and have the 404-handler route frequently-occurring 404s to an appropriate page. You may already do this, and my example does not fit the "frequently occurring" criteria!

FWIW our 404 handler uses a look-up table of Exact, Starts-with and Contains matches with target redirects.

The 404 log then shows which URLs were redirected successfully (and to where).

So I can see a) whether the redirects were "sensible" and b) which URLs are i) not being redirected at all and ii) popular

Also allows setting up redirects for www.sqlteam.com/LOGIN or even www.sqlteam.com/FAQ

Kristen,

I do something similar but not as sophisticated. I didn't realized I'd missed a link though. I'll take a look at this when I get back from vacation.

"I didn't realized I'd missed a link though"

No worries on that ... but now I know the process I'll point out any others I stumble over.
